Oprah Winfrey held a “Master Class” on Morgan Freeman weeks back and I finally got to see it yesterday. As he narrated his life story, he talked about living without and at the brink of homelessness while chasing his dream and then finally getting a 9-5 office job. Having Kids already, this job offered a tangible sense of “security” which matched no other especially being a man and a provider at that. This made me think of just how many of us are trapped in this perpetual cycle of trying to chose between dream and stability. How many of us wake up everyday hoping that the clock is an hour earlier so sleep can free us from having to face a reality that isn’t so bright and for most its a miserable job.
A lot of motivational speakers and writers tell us “jump”, “take that leap of faith” and the classic ” if you want it bad enough you will give up everything for it.”. This dilemma I’ve met myself being in the music industry for over 7 years and after 2 record deals full of promise, i still carry strong optimism by my side.
Realizing your dream and following it isn’t all open doors i tell you. I have friends who lost their families over this, friends who left stability in the corporate world to follow their childhood dream and their dependents suffered for it. Some made it, but some failed on that trial and went back to settle in stability. I fully understand them.
Morgan Freeman who is now one of the most sought after actors in the world, didn’t get to that pinnacle of success until the age of FIFTY. Imagine that! He was an actor since his twenties.
The question is, would you still pursue your dream even if it takes you 30 semi years to get there. I’m not necessarily saying give up your job and go to Hollywood, New york, Silicon Valley or your Destination of dreams, I’m talking about keeping that innate drive and ambition. Ive known people who had dreams at 20, had kids, raised them and at 50 STILL pursued and accomplished. Im a strong beleiver in my purpose and even if it takes 50 more years, ill still be out here trying to make a better world for everybody. follow your dreams. the answer is YES!
hope it inspires the next person
